Why social services at the library?
Today’s libraries are not just collections of books but one of the last truly public spaces, community hubs that create space for community meetings, life-long learning, resource navigation, programing for all ages where everyone is welcome. Bringing social services to the library meets people where they are to support patrons experiencing difficulties and also supports the library and library staff.
The Athens-Clarke County Library program started in 2018 with a grant from IMLS in collaboration with the UGA School of Social Work to create the TILT program or Trauma Informed Library Transformation. Now ACCL has a full time social worker and MSW student interns in the fall and spring to better assist patrons with resource navigation and a wide variety of needs.
