José Durán

Hola, mi nombre es José Durán, soy de Mexico y he vivido en Athens por 3 años. Los programas de ESL en Athens han sido muy importantes para mí pues me han ayudado mucho. Las clases de inglés en la biblioteca de la comunidad de Pinewood y en Redeemer Presbyterian Church, me ayudaron a aprender más inglés, hacer nuevos amigos, tener mejores oportunidades de empleo; y ahora estoy estudiando para aprobar mi exámen de ciudadania y poder convertirme en ciudadano de los Estados Unidos. Creo que los programas de ESL son una de las cosas más importantes para la comunidad inmigrante, para aprender el lenguaje, aprender la cultura americana, historia y comunidad, todo esto es muy importante. Siempre estoy muy agradecido por estos programas en Athens!

Hello, my name is Jose Antonio Duran Ruiz, I’m from Mexico and I have lived in Athens for 3 years. ESL programs in Athens have been very important to me and have helped me so much. Classes at the Pinewoods Neighborhood library and at Redeemer Presbyterian Church helped me learn more English, make new friends, have better job opportunities, and I am now studying to pass the citizenship exam so I can become a United States citizen. I think that ESL programs are one of the most important things for immigrants in our community. To learn the language, learn about American culture, history, the community–it’s all very important. And I am always very grateful for these programs in Athens!

Hola: Mi nombre es Teresa Alvarez. Yo estoy estudiando inglés. Quiero mencionar que tengo una excelente maestra la cual me está ayudando a desenvolverme con este idioma que es un poco complicado. Recuerden que con paciencia y mucha perseverancia se logran las cosas. Recuerden nuestro lema: SI SE PUEDE!!!!!!!!! Necesitamos aprender éste idioma para poder ayudar a nuestros hijos y para cualquier problema que ellos lleguen a tener; o simplemente para superarnos.

Debemos aprovechar lo que el gobierno nos ofrece para salir adelante; es gratis, así que no tenemos pretextos. A estudiar se ha dicho! Les dejo con un fuerte abrazo (SI SE PUEDE)

Hello, My name is Teresa Alvarez. I am studying English. I want to mention that I have an excellent teacher that is helping me deal with this language which is a bit complicated. Remember that with patience and perseverance we could achieve many things. Remember our motto YES WE CAN !!!!!!!!! We need to learn this language to help our children in any problem they could have or just to improve ourselves.

We should participate in the programs the government offers which are available to all Hispanics to succeed; they are free, so we have no excuses. Study, enough said! I leave you a big hug (YES WE CAN).

Hola: Mi nombre es María Rogel. Les quiero hablar de cómo les beneficia el poder aprender hablar inglés. Mucha gente dirá “ah pues, yo sólo hablo español y si quieren entederme que aprendan ellos.” Pero no se dan cuenta de lo mal que es no saber hablarlo o entenderlo ya que se utiliza en todas partes como el doctor, la tienda, la escuela, etc.

En lo personal me siento una persona realizada cuando hago mis cosas sin ayuda de nadie. Yo se que dirán: “ok, alguien me ayudará.” Pero es muy feo que te digan no puedo, no tengo tiempo, ustedes saben, no todos están a dispocisión de nosotros.

Otro punto muy importante es el ejemplo que uno les da a nuestros hijos. Saben que ellos son el reflejo de nosotros mismos. Aprendan inglés y van a ver que muchas puertas se abren.

Hello: My name is María Rogel. I want to talk about the benefits of learning to speak English. Many people say “oh well, I only speak Spanish and if you want to understand me, you learn my language.” But they do not realize how bad it is not able to speak or understand because English it is used everywhere at the doctor, shop, school, etc.

Personally, I am a fulfilled person when I do my things without assistance. You could say, “Ok, someone help me.” But it’s ugly when people have no time to help you, you know, not everyone is available when you need translation.

Another important point is the example that we give to our children. You know that they are a reflection of us. Learn English and you will see that many doors will open.

Cuando yo llegué a los Estados Unidos, no podía hablar casi nada de ingles. Despues me enteré del programa de Even Star en el que ofrecían las clases de inglés con el cuidado de niños, lo cual estaba perfecto,porque no sólo te enseñaban inglés si no que también te daban clases de cómo ser mejores padres. Despues de dos años de estudios recibí mi reconocimiento por parte del programa, y no saben cuanto me ha ayudado a traves de estos años con la escuela de mis hijos, en el trabajo y muchas cosas más, como poder estudiar para tener el GED. Ahora me da mucho gusto poder ayudar a las personas sirviendo como voluntaria para traducir en las conferencias de las escuelas y muchos otros lugares.

No esperen más y ustedes también tomen la desición de aprender inglés y van a ver todas las oportunidades que se les pueden presentar con el conocimiento del idioma de éste país.

When I came to the United States I could not speak English. Then I heard about the Even Start program, which offered English classes with child care, which was perfect because the program not only taught English but it also gave you lessons on how to be better parents. After two years of study I received my graduation certificate from the program. You have no idea how much it has helped me through these years with my children’s school, at work and much more, like being able to take the GED study. Now I am very happy to help people serving as a volunteer to translate at school conferences and many other places.

Do not wait any longer! Go ahead and make the decision to learn English! You will see all the opportunities you will have with the knowledge of the language of this country.
