The Athens Regional Library System provides library materials for reading and information services to all segments of the public in the five counties making up the system. This involves acquiring a collection of resources, both print and non-print, for the regional system.

These materials are organized and prepared for use throughout the system. A centralized automated system is provided throughout the region. Patrons may access information by using computers in each facility or by dial access.

The Athens Regional Library System administers the Special Needs Library of NE Georgia which serves 21 counties in northeast Georgia. These centers are also referred to as subregional libraries for the blind and physically handicapped. Most of the recorded material distributed through the Special Needs Library comes from the Library of Congress. However, the Special Needs Library provides a collection of large print books and some locally recorded materials that are not available through it or other
